The pace of the book Divergent by Veronica Roth is a science fiction book and it is medium pace. It is not too fast and not to slow. So it make it the book interesting for anyone to read. I have enjoyed the beginning of the book so far.The plot of the story is written in the first thirty pages. From the very beginning Beatrice -the main character of the story- finds out something that she can not tell anyone else or she will be killed. She can not tell her family or friends. When I found that out it made me want to read and it got me so interested in the book even more and she if anyone finds out about her. And what will happen to her if anyone does find out about her? Will she die or stay alive when they do find out about her? In the next few pages she struggles to pick the right faction and the faction she belongs in. She picks to go to a different faction not the one she was born into becoming an initiate. Beatrice leaves her brother and her parents. I could never leave my family behind. And now I am going through the same thing as Beatrice kind of. Because now i have to chose whether i want to stay in the same state as my parents and go to school or leave this state and go to a different one. The author makes Beatrice very believable in that way. And in many other ways people can relate to her especially teenagers. To me this book already has meaning to it in the first few pages. The meaning i have taken from the book so far is to believe in yourself and do what is best for you not for everyone else because its your life. I came to that meaning because of they way she was acting and her parents were acting. She would think twice about helping someone when her parents would. She started to believe in herself during the choosing ceremony and leaving her parents and her brother. And even though her parents wanted her to stay with them. The best thing for her was to leave abnegation. She picked the faction she felt she belonged into depending on her traits and what she believed was the one for her. I feel like her mom kinda knew she was gonna pick a different faction because of the way she was acting like she said during the ceremony she would love her even if she picked a different faction and she did not seem at all worried when Beatrice picked a different faction.
I like your observation that in spite of the futuristic dystopian setting of this novel, the story, the character is still something you can relate to. I also think it is important for you to note as a writer how Roth was able to reel you in by presenting a problem that drives the reader on to see how it turns out. You might try the same thing when you begin writing fiction.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I absolutely LOVE this book! I love the characters and how they relate with each other. I also love the real life connection you brought in. I thought the connection you brought up about her leaving her parents to pursue what she wanted to leaving for college (maybe out of state) was very current with what we, as seniors, are encountering currently. I had into thought of that before and was intrigued by that reference. I also love the title of the blog as the faction she chose. The factions are also similar to us choosing which colleges to apply to. Every college has its own unique attributes, not unlike that of abnegation, dauntless, etc. Have you finished the first book yet? If you have I definitely recommend continuing with the series. I also hope that you did not see the movie before you started reading (the movie leaves out a lot of characterization so I would wait until you finish the book). I would love to hear more about how you relate to Tris in other blog posts. I would also like to hear more about the language and diction that Veronica Roth uses and why she uses it, because I think that says a lot about the book. When I was reading this series, I found the culture to be completely different and I found myself wondering about them. Have you noticed any differences in our culture?
ReplyDeleteAs for the questions you were wondering about --- they will be mostly answered by the end of the book.
Good Luck!
I have never read this book, but I heard it's awesome. I saw the trailer for the movie, and it actually seems a lot like hunger games. Have you read or seen hunger games? If so, how similar are they? I'd like to know. I like all the different connections you're making. It sounds like you have really dived into these pages. I love fast moving books, because they're just so easy to devour. I'm terrible at committing to slower paced books, so I think I may try this one!
ReplyDeleteI like you pointed out how the author makes the characters believable, because that can be a real problem in some books. I also really like how you are asking all sorts of questions. It makes me really want to read this! Do you ever picture yourself in Beatrice's situation? Would you have done things differently? So curious to know if you've ever compared this to the Hunger Games. Let me know, and good luck with the rest of the book! hope it's as good as it sounds.
